The Bedford in Balham, talk about surprise gems. When I got invited to visit The Bedford, I genuinely did not know what to expect. I had never been to Balham but I was curious.
The hotel is 2 minutes walk from Balham station, and is situated on top of The Bedford pub – a landmark in South London. What surprised me at first was how big the building actually is on the inside. You cannot judge that by the outside to be honest. There is a pub, there is a restaurant, there is a comedy bar, there are function rooms, there is a hotel – it is HUGE.
The Bedford has been newly refurbished and re-opened its doors at the end of 2018. Originally built in 1931, it is lovely to see how the owners have preserved original details but modernised them. I love the vibe of the whole place, as I think every hotel should have a bit of history in its roots. At least that is important for me. Check in was still work in progress when I went to visit, as I was one of the first guests, however everyone was so lovely, making sure I felt comfortable.
There are 15 bedrooms in total, each one with its own unique set up. I have a beautiful, luxury room, overlooking the side street. When I say overlooking, I had a huge bathtub underneath the window, so I could soak and observe – the dream. The room had vintage decor touches, patterns for days and was just huge.
The bathroom was in one of my favourite colours – green. I actually got inspiration from its details for my future bathroom, that’s how much I enjoyed it.
When you do get to visit, go and roam around. I did not get a chance to see a comedy show, however the endless wall with framed photos of all the comedians who have graced the venue is a true testament to how fun it can be. There is also live music bar, which takes you back to the 60s maybe, very cool vibe.
The restaurant is busy and vibrant but the service is top notch. Although it was packed, there was no waiting for drinks and food, everything was running super smooth and the staff was always smiling and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious and the portions are more than generous.
I would definitely recommend a stay in The Bedford even if you are a Londoner and just looking to a fun staycation. It is definitely different but in a fabulous way. I cannot wait to visit again.
