Here we go, I said it. Casa del Mar is seriously the best hotel I have ever stayed in. Stop looking if you are going to Santa Monica and just book it, you won’t regret it. That actually means something coming from me I feel. Having spent years working in hotels and traveling around, I think that I have a big enough base to compare. So far, this is my life choice and the place I would like to stay every time I go to LA.
Right off Santa Monica Pier and the beach. It is a 5 minute walk to get to the pier and you can also view it from the rooms. It is private and secluded, it is not smack down Ocean Blvrd, so the noise is reduced to that of the waves in the morning.
I did not get enough time to enjoy the place. Only a 1 night stay instead of 3, as my work plans changed and my holiday was cut short. However, I honestly think it was the most amazing night and morning ever. I am a bad jet lagger, like the poster child for jet lag.
Checking in after an 11 hour flight, with no sleep is always a bit dreadful. However, I just walked in and everything was ready and perfect. No unnecessary questions, paperwork or overly excited receptionists. They gave me just enough of a welcome for it not to be too much. They also offered me welcome drinks which I never took advantage of, as I just passed out.
You know how a lot of hotels show you room pictures when you book, and then it just isn’t the same, once you arrive? Well, my room was better than what it looked like it to be in the photos. The bed is insane, easily fitting 3 people. I slept like a baby for 12 hours solid. I usually struggle to sleep in new places, so this is a true testament to comfort. I remember opening my eyes in the morning and hearing a remote soothing sound. I wondered what it was and then I realised, it was the sound of waves breaking on the beach.
The decor is aimed to make you feel home. I did not feel like I was staying in a hotel but in my own beach house, which I have carefully decorated. I left myself some books to read, and added a touch of the sea with some shells.
The bathroom and the amenities were also to die for. The bath tub opening into the room through the little shutters was a touch I have never seen but I really liked.
I had breakfast in my room and once again they surprised me. Firstly, they picked up the phone, took my order and did not try to up-sell me, question me 15 times about what do I want and how. Secondly, they arrived 20 minutes later on the dot. I can see that I can count this happening in 5 star hotels on the fingers of one of my hands. Because oh boy, don’t they love to have a chat when you order in room dining. Take a note from Casa del Mar’s book, as for this alone I would go back and spend my money there.
I utilised my time at the pool of course. Once again, it was peaceful, quiet and non intrusive. There were menus, I got asked if I wanted to order anything just once and then the lady just told me where she would be should I need anything. I enjoyed the bliss for good 6 hours.
To say goodbye they actually got me a car and drove me to the hotel I was staying for work which was 2 minutes away, so I did not have to walk with my luggage. The wifi was perfection as well and worked everywhere. I wish i could just move to live there to be honest (in the hotel 🙂 )
